Magazine Advert Ancillary Task

Evaluation: How did you use new technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation: What Have you learned from your Audience Feedback?

Evaluation: How effective is the combination of your main and ancillary tasks?

Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of real media products

Audience Feedback

On the 20th March 'Trinity School' showcased a creative arts evening. This evening consisted of the showcase of our music video to a mixed target audience. This allowed us to collect feedback both technical and emotional, and also positive and negative which will allow Dynamic productions to understand the points we can improve on.

With this feedback I have been able to clearly determine how to evaluate the product using Reception Theory has had an effect on the audience as our video was perceived in different ways by different people. Below is a video showing audience responses.

CD Justification

When showing my CD booklet to my peers i recieved mixed responses, whilst the majority positively responded to CD, some responded with comments such as:

"It's very simple, i like the pictures but there isn't much too it"

"It's really basic, was it supposed to be this way?"

"I like the mise-en-scene it gives a depressing vibe, but there isn't a lot on it"

However this was done purposely to conform to the conventions of Muse and their album artwork. Muse tend to keep their CD artwork very simplistic, in many of their releases they tend to only include an image which stands out supporting their frequent use of Gaze Theory which is why i decided to make my album very simplistic with iconic images and song lyrics. Below are examples of Muse albums that show simplicity.

Analysis: CD

Development of Ancillary task: CD

Below are images showing the development of my CD booklet for my ancillary task. Because i have chosen to conform to the convention of simplicity which many Muse albums conform to it was relatively simple to complete the booklet, however the only trouble was applying a consistent contrast to all of my images. Below i have also posted the original images to show how i have developed them so that they have been able to conform to the codes and conventions of an indie album and also incorporate theories such as Gaze Theory into my CD booklet as some images have been edited so that they are 'striking'

Analysis: Magazine

My magazine has developed in a different way than i originally anticipated, however i feel this has been a positive improvement. An example of the development of my magazine is the use of editing, originally i intended to only add text to the main image that was taken. However after research into magazine adverts for the 'Indie' genre i decided to edit the contrast of the main image so that Gaze Theory was incorporated into my product which allowed me to conform to the general codes and conventions of magazines

Development of Ancillary task: Magazine

I have print screened the development of my magazine advert, i feel that i have incorporated Genre Theory whilst also adhering to the house style that myself and my fellow group members agreed upon. I have incorporated Genre Theory into my magazine by adhering to the 'Indie' genre in ways such as dressing the characters in the image clothes associated with the Indie genre. At the same time through research i was able to identify and conform to the codes and conventions of the Muse genre by using simple images and using simple concepts such as the 'Muse' logo in PK & Co font which is similar to the text which Muse includes in a substantial of their products

Sketch Drafts: Magazine Advert

I have produced drafts that will allow me to have a general idea of the layout of the magazine advert i was to produce. Whilst producing my magazine drafts i felt limited to an extent as i had to adhere to the House Style that Dynamic Productions members had agreed upon, whilst also conforming to conventions of the 'Indie' genre, in particular the conventions of Muse.

Sketch Drafts: Album Cover

Here are drafts that i completed. Whilst creating drafts it was vital that i incorporate Genre Theory into my work by adhering to the conventions of Muse products, a convention which has been clearly sustained in not only my work but also my fellow Dynamic Production group members work is the simplicity of the products that have been produced

Analysis of rough cut

After viewing the rough cut of our video there are many changes that need to be made, the most obvious being the fixing of the many blank spaces within the video which we intend to film with footage that has not yet been captured and properly edited.

However there are also other elements of our video which had gone unnoticed previously which must also be altered. An example of this is that colour correction must be added in various places such as band shots so that Reception Theory can be properly conveyed to the audience that this conforms to the codes and conventions of the indie genre.

Also some shots that we have placed in our video will also be removed such as the shot of the main character holding a microphone which then transitions to him drinking alcohol, this will be removed because we felt this shot was incongruent and it did not convey the correct emotions to the audience.

Also the use of effects must become more apparent within our video so that Narrative Theory can be properly conveyed, an example of this is that colour correction and also the use of a transition must be added in the scene of charlie falling back and landing in his bed. The colour of this shot is wrong as to be more affective and make the narrative clearer as the colour of this shot will be similar to the rest of the video, and also the transition will help move the narrative along.

There are many changes and additions that must be made to this rough cut, however this rough cut has allowed us to form a template, and now we are able to understand the basic outline of our music video and where certain shots will go. Also this rough cut has allowed us to obtain feedback on what should be incorporated into the video such as the use of more effects and colour correction. And also what should not be added to our video, an example of this would be 'flash back shots' of Charlie and Katherine, however from the feedback we received it was decided that a certain amount of ambiguity should be left in our video so that individual audience members could interpret the video in their own way.

Rough Cut - Class Premiere

On Thursday 1st March, the rough cut of the Dynamic productions music video was shown to our fellow class members. This allowed us to collect vital feedback to create a stronger revised version of our video. It was originally decided that a second version of our video would be created based on the evaluative comments of our class, however instead it was decided to continuously show our video with improvements to fellow class members of our class and also ordinary members of the public, this was done so that evaluative comments of aspects such as camera shots and effects could be collected from our class, and emotional responses from people who do not study media could be collected from ordinary members of the public meaning a range of comments from a wide range of viewpoints could be collected. Whilst our class members were viewing the video they were asked to evaluate it using reception theory and uses and gratification theory and also to assess the any improvements that could be made.

Below is a list of quotes about our music video:

"I felt sorry for the main character as if I was connected with him"

"It allows you to feel his anger as well as his hurt for whats happened to him"

"The jump cuts work perfectly with the video"

"The fact that the music video contradicts the title of the song 'feeling good' works well as it demonstrates initiative"

Below is the rough cut of our music video

Snorricam Execution and results

After my fellow group member had completed his home made version of the Snorricam we decided to test it and also to explain the way in which we were going to use the Snorricam. Below is a video explaining what the Snorricam will be used for.

Below, there is a short clip of the Snorricam being used on Charlie Morgan (the main character) showing how the Snorricam has been used to clearly convey the disorientation and emotional frustration of the main character to the audience. As i explained in the video above we have melded two different scenes of Charlie spinning in two different directions as this further conveys the emotional frustration that he is going through. It can be argued Reception Theory has been used as a result of using the Snorricam, when showed to different people some thought Charlie was conveying "anger" others "depression" and some "jealousy" showing that different people have received the connotative aspect of this short clip in different ways.

Final Film Shoot

Today was the final film shoot for the narrative. This shoot involved Myself and fellow group member Nicholas Berreen filming Charlie Morgan (the main character) at his house. The location of the final film shoot was his bedroom, the reason for choosing his bedroom was primarily because we felt that Charlie would act most naturally in his bedroom as this is an environment he is very comfortable in. Another reason was because we felt that charlie's room had the correct mise en scene as the music video will end where it started. It also helps to reflect the sombre mood of this particular section through the use of props such as alcohol bottles that will be seen in the video.

Below are links to behind the scenes Vlogs that were recorded just after we had finished recording

The second Vlog illustrates how our project has used cross media platforms as earlier in my blog there are images of myself and my group capturing principle photography, through careful planning it was also arranged to capture images that could possibly used as a key platform in our music video that same shoot so that our music video's narrative would be clear through the use of that image explaining that the main characters had some form of previous relationship

Music Video: Further Snorricam research and Development

In the music video produced by Dynamic Productions there is a particular scene that involves the use of a Snorricam rig. The rig allows the person attached to it to walk freely,  hands free with the camera fixed on their face at all times. A SnorriCam is a specialised rig mount used in film making that is attached to the body of an actor, facing the actor directly, so when they walk, they do not appear to move, but everything around them does, providing an unusual sense of vertigo (disorientation) for the viewer. Whilst assessing what camera shots should be used for each shot it was decided that the Snoricam would allow us to capture a significant shot of the main character in a disorientated state whilst at the same time conveying different emotions through Reception Theory as different individuals may view the shot as conveying different emotions such as sadness or anger Below is an example of a professional Snorricam and a video demonstrating its use in motion

Promotional Package: Research

What is a promotional Package?

- A promotional package is a package that includes ancillary items to support the promotion of of an event, film, band or social star. A promotional package will include various artifacts such as posters, a digipak or album, singles, a music video and a website. A promotional package will tend to have a variety of media texts that cross through a range of media platforms whilst maintaining constant similarities such as a constant font.

Single Research

Prior to the release of an album, a number of commercially favorable singles are released to the general public. This musicians to raise awareness of their upcoming album and at the same time allow for some success in the charts. Singles tend to be released  before and after the album, this allows for musicians to increase revenue as well as raise further awareness to potential fans. Singles tend to made into videos. A relevant example is the video that was made for the song 'Feeling Good' that was sung by Muse. Below is an example of a promotional package by Indie artists 'The Wombats' which includes a range of products such as:

- A T shirt
- Postcards
- A poster
- Signed Artwork
- Limited Edition Case
- LP Edition of the album

- Photos of the band

Album Cover: Album Format Research

There are many formats that ancillary products could come in for a promotional package, for my ancillary product i have decided to either create a  Jewel CD case with an actual CD (Compact Disc) or a Digipak. But first research must be conducted into these products.

What is a CD?

- A CD (also known as Compact Disc) is an optical disc used to store digital data. It was originally developed to store and playback sound recordings exclusively, but the format was later adapted for storage of data (CD-ROM).

What is a Jewel CD case?

-  A jewel CD case is the original compact disc case that has been used since the compact disc was first released in 1982. It is a three-piece plastic case which usually contains a compact disc along with the liner notes and a back card. Two opposing transparent halves are hinged together to form the casing, the back half holding a media tray that grips the disc by its hole.

What is a Digipak?

-  Digipaks were among the first alternatives to jewel cases to be used by major record companies, digipaks typically consist of a gatefold (book-style) paperboard or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of holding a CD or DVD attached to the inside. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets.

This is a Digipak created by Muse for the album 'The Resistance'

Album Cover Research

There are many different things that could be done when creating my album, such as using Adobe Photoshop to create various effects such as a black and white image of the band. Before developing my album research had to be conducted first. Below are albums and a CD produced my Muse, the albums are 'Black Holes & Revelations' and 'Absolution' the CD is from Black Holes & Revelations. From my research i was able to identify general conventions of Muse albums, such as the use of simple text and simple images, and the lack of effects created by Photoshop. To conform to this i decided to only use minimal effects in my album artwork, to use simple but striking images of the band so Gaze Theory could be applied, and also to ensure my CD artwork was as simplistic as possible, although i would like to use more effects on my ancillary products such as possibly adding an image to my CD it is vital i ensure to conform to the conventions of muse products such as those below.

Album Artwork

For the promotional package. My Dynamic Productions group member Nick Berreen and myself have decided to create album artwork for the song 'Feeling Good'. What must be considered when creating Album Artwork is the style sheet. This allows us to maintain a constant mise-en-scene and apply various codes and conventions of Muse artefacts throughtout the range of products being produced. Provided are drafts for the single 'Feeling Good'

Sketch Drafts: Single Cover of 'Feeling Good'

For the promotional package myself and fellow group member Nicholas Berreen have decided to create a single for the song 'Feeling Good'. It is conventional in music to release popular singles independently. These singles are typically released in digital format on music sharing websites such as Itunes, we have decided to only create the 'album artwork' for the song.

Factors that we will have to consider are making sure that we conform to the style sheet. This will ensure that a consistent house style is sustained throughout all of our media products.
